CLIMATE & WEATHER
It had been written from Chateaubriand: “there are climates, which for their extreme voluptuousness can be dangerous for your virtue”...

San Remo can be described as its main example. In this little piece of earth looking to south-east protected by mounts, nature and climate bind themselves together in a bright harmony which lets the tourist enjoy all the hear round its many benefits.
This really is the best goal for metropolitan wanderings looking for some relaxing days, isn’t it? You just have to compare values picked in January (the coldest month). The medium value of Paris, + 2°C, - 1.5°C of Wien, -0.8°C of Berlin, - 1.2°C of Zurich and + 6°C of Rome have to front an encouraging + 11.3°C of the “City of Flowers”.
But this is not enough: let’s compare the bathing climatic index, the real measure instrument for people looking for sunny, not too damp, refreshed by nice breezes, destinations. It results from the relation between rainy days and medium temperatures of bathing season ( from June to September). Your perfect bathing destination is that which has a result lower than 3. San Remo wins over all the others with its unique 0.4, better than Naples 0.7 and really outclassing the first two French localities: Toulon (1.6) and Montpellier 2.6. The Flowers Riviera and San Remo, real tourist capital, are included in a subtropical climatic area, with 2.900 sunny hors pro year, equivalent to the 60% of all the geographical possible hours. A never ending spring which guarantees a winter’s mild climate and a fresh one in summer, thanks to its sea’s action.

The first exterior consequence: a luxurious flora which enriches the many gardens and parks on our coast. Not only local trees but, above all, African and Oriental ones, perfectly grown up under our sun.
Why? First of all, let’s think to mountains, so close to the coast, which protect it from northern winds with their majesty. The massif of Bignone mount, for example, only 7 Km far from the sea, has a peak of 1300 meters, the Caggio mount reaches 1050 m. far 4 km from the coast-line, the Ceppo one, 1660 m. at 12 km, the Saccarello peak 2000 m. at 25 km.
Moreover, the cold air masses have to rise above this “Alpine-Apenninical” wall, in this way they warm themselves and let put the dump out, reaching the Riviera hotter and drier.
We have also to consider, that the western coast differs itself much from the eastern one for its climate, temperatures and rains. Air masses, in fact, usually canalize in those valleys (typical of Genua’s and Savona’s surrounds) which lay perpendicular to the sea, in this way they become northern winds. From Imperia to Ventimiglia, there is just one valley of the kind, that of Roya river, which is so encased among high mountains , which is not even reached from cold air.
Their exposure to the sun it’s the last element which lets the mild Flowers Riviera differ itself from the severer Eastern Ligurian Riviera and from its neighbour, the Tuscanian one. The last ones directly look at north-west and are more favourable to “libeccio” which is damper and more violet than the “oriental” sirocco.
